For Tony, figurative painting is all about depicting mood and intimacy within a moment, using a loose approach to brushwork and in places strong contrasting values to create the illusion of depth.
Tony pulls inspiration for his alluring dance scenes from the times when he himself was learning to dance, at points attending three to four evening classes a week. From the Argentine Tango lessons to Modern Jive and Rock and Roll. He loved attending the Tango classes which were held on the third floor of a beautiful old Georgian building with all the original interior decorations. It made it feel like he was stepping back into the 1960s; little dark corners with a retired policeman behind the bar reading a newspaper, and of course an old-fashioned snooker hall on the floor below added to the narrative. After a while he would turn up early for his classes with his sketchbook, sketching the dancers around him whilst contemplating how he would decipher this when he came to create the painting. A real-life data collecting experience and opportunity to study his subject.
Tony would often get home late from his classes and, on occasion, spent time writing honest notes on how the experience made him feel. Planning how, one day, he would create a set of paintings that perfectly depict his memories of these times.

I just visited the gallery to enquire about stretching canvas services. Rob was extremely helpful and I didn't feel like it was my first visit to the gallery. He gave me genuine advice on how to stretch the canvas my self as i could not afford the service charges and even offered to lend his tools if I needed them for a day. Superb job framing my grandfathers collection of pipes. I followed Robs recommendation on frame and mounting card and he did not let me down with a great colour choice and 1st class finish.

I have thought for a long time about having my grandfather’s WW1 and my father’s WW2 medals framed alongside their photos and I have been dithering somewhat as I was worried that I wouldn’t be happy with the finished result. I basically needed something very old framed in a way that would fit into an uncluttered all white modern home. I had a really good feeling as soon as I walked into The Circle Gallery that I had found the right place. I had a general idea about what I was looking for and Katie who helped me was not only patient but came up with a good idea I hadn’t thought about. These medals mean a huge amount to me and when I saw the finished result today I could have cried as they look absolutely amazing and far far better than I could ever have hoped for. Fantastic service cannot recommended highly enough.
This gallery does wonderful framing and we have had three or four of our pictures framed here now. What sets them apart is the superb customer service and the time spent with the customer choosing the right frame. I would thoroughly recommend Louisa and all at Circle Art gallery.
