Harvey Martin

Harvey gained a degree in Fine Art and Printmaking at the age of 40, graduating in 1996. The degree show featured a series of Pembrokeshire seascapes, reflecting a deep connection to the coastal landscape. For many years, Harvey painted in West Wales, exhibiting in a number of galleries in the region.

Frequent visits to Canada, initially to Toronto and later to the west coast of British Columbia, have had a significant influence on Harvey’s work. While in Toronto, he created and exhibited paintings of the Northern Lakes. After moving to British Columbia, Harvey began exploring the landscapes of the west coast, culminating in winning first prize at the Steveston BC Plein Air Competition in 2018.

For the past 12 years, Harvey has lived in Ascot, Berkshire, focusing on plein air paintings of local scenes as well as landscapes inspired by visits to Devon and Cornwall. In 2023, he was honoured as the Sky Arts Wildcard winner at Castle Ward, Northern Ireland. Living near London has also provided inspiration, resulting in a collection of watercolours depicting urban scenes, often capturing the atmosphere of the city at night or in the rain. These works are developed in the studio, drawing from sketches and photography.

Bold colour and atmospheric interpretation are hallmarks of Harvey’s work, influenced by artists such as Van Gogh, Edward Hopper, Wassily Kandinsky, and Gabriella Münter.

In addition to painting, Harvey has a passion for writing short stories and poetry. His work has been published in Writers’ Forum, a national magazine. The interplay between painting and poetry is a recurring theme in his creative process, with each art form often inspiring the other. Harvey strives to imbue their paintings with a sense of poetic imagery, aiming to evoke wonder and reflection in viewers, much like poetry itself.
